Why is my Shampoo and Conditioner bar melting in the shower?
Buying your first Shampoo and Conditioner bar
You have finally decided to take the leap and buy a shampoo and conditioner bar. First of all, congratulations and welcome to the sustainability and eco-friendly team, we have been waiting for you. This small step is the start of something big!
You think the ledge in your shower is the perfect spot – minimalist, classy and environmentally friendly. You are pleased with the decor and walk out of the bathroom with a smile.
You incorporate these bars into your shower routine, life is good, but then you notice these bars are always wet and soggy. they are sitting in a puddle of water or every shower you and your household has the bars are also getting a shower. You start to get frustrated because you paid good money for these, and you decided to take the sustainable step and do something good for the planet, but your bars are melting before your eyes, you are freaking out because the packaging said the bars should last at least 12 months!! At the rate your bars are going, they are lucky if they last a month!
Why are your shampoo and conditioner bars melting?
Don’t worry, there is a simple solution to why your shampoo and conditioner bars are melting. At the end of the day, your bars are soap, and if soap sits in water or is constantly damp it will start to disintegrate. Trust me I learnt this the hard way! I remove my shampoo and conditioner bars from the shower and store them on bamboo racks under my sink. They are propped up, so they don’t stick to the bench and have good airflow to help dry out the bar between each use. This key step is important for the longevity of your bar.

What about my powdered shampoo?
This is a great question if you leave your powered shampoo in your shower, it will ruin your shampoo, water will get inside and make your powder clumpy or it will stick to the sides making it difficult to get out. It is important to remove your aluminium canister from the shower and store it in a dry area.
Sometimes being sustainable and eco-friendly requires a bit of maintenance and extra care for your products. Think of it like this, you do regular maintenance on your hair to keep it looking fresh and healthy, it’s the same for your products. Take care of your products and they will take care of you.
As you can tell, I am writing from personal experience as I have had these things happen to me throughout my sustainability journey. I didn’t give though. I just had to learn how to take care of my products. I am committed to my sustainability journey and my cause, but most of all I love sharing my experiences, the good the bad and the ugly!
Ask me anything
If you are having issues with any of your products, for example, your Loofah going mouldy? Same thing, give your Loofah time to dry out completely between uses.
