As a sustainability blogger, I am always looking for products that can help me reduce waste. When I discovered the idea of a REUSABLE paper towel as an alternative to single-use paper towel I was intrigued. I tested Unpaper Towel by Earths Tribe to find out how it compares to paper towel and whether it is a more sustainable choice.

I found Earths Tribe Unpaper Towels to be a fabulous product that I use in my kitchen daily. This is a super easy swap that I would recommend to anyone wanting to create less waste.

The towel on the left features a pattern of vertical strings of pearls, while the right towel has a simpler design with large white daisies. Both towels have snap buttons on the corners and a label that reads 'Earths Tribe'

Unpaper Towel Overview

Unpaper Towel is a fabric cloth that has been designed as eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper towels. They are made from GOTS organic cotton which can be washed and reused multiple times, making them waste-free option for cleaning up spills and messes around the house.

The Unpaper Towel come in a roll of 4 or 16. The individual wipes clip together with a KAM plastic snaps which are BPA free. You can also purchase a stainless steel Unpaper Towel holder to hold your roll for easy access on your kitchen bench.

There are many uses for Unpaper Towel – Use to clean up spills, as a washcloth, facial cloth, napkin – I even use them for soaking excess moisture from tofu when cooking!

What Are The Benefits

Why make the switch to reusable Unpaper Towel? Let’s take a look at some compelling reasons this might be a product you might like to try!

Environmental Impact

Many people use paper towel without considering the environmental impact. Even though paper towel is made from a material that is recyclable – paper towel CANNOT be recycled.

The environmental impact of paper towel is profound. The production process for paper towels involves cutting down trees, which contributes to deforestation and habitat loss. The manufacturing process requires large amounts of energy and water, which has a negative impact on the environment.

So is using a towel made from cotton a better option? As with any eco-product – I don’t take claims of sustainability or eco-friendliness at face value. Greenwashing is a huge problem and many brands cannot be trusted at their word.

Earths Tribe is an Australian-owned and operated ethical brand that balances people, planet and profits. They work with manufacturers abroad that have the same values in not only the environment but also with the ethical treatment of their employees, including health, safety, pay and working conditions.

Unpaper Towels made by Earth’s Tribe are made with GOTS certified organic cotton. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

Reusable products are only a good switch for single-use when they are used many times over. The quality of the Earths Tribe Unpaper Towels is exceptional. They are long-lasting, durable and easy to wash meaning they will last for years – replacing countless roles of disposable paper towel.

Cost-Effectiveness

While Unpaper Towels may seem expensive upfront, they are actually more cost-effective in the long run. A pack of reusable paper towels can last for years, while a pack of traditional paper towels may only last for a few weeks. Over time, this can save you money and reduce waste.

A roll of paper towels costs $1.10 – $3 per roll vs a roll of 16 Unpaper Towels is $39.95.

At an average of $2 per roll if you replace more than 20 rolls of paper towel with reusable Unpaper Towel you start saving money.

Versatility in Use

There are many ways to use Unpaper Towels in the kitchen, bathroom and beyond!

  • Unpaper towels are perfect for use in the kitchen. You can use them to wipe up spills, clean counters, and dry dishes. They are also great for wrapping food, like sandwiches or snacks.
  • A tip for using unpaper towels in the kitchen is to keep a small basket or container on your counter for used towels. This will help you remember to wash them and keep them separate from your clean towels.
  • Unpaper towels are also great for use in cleaning routines. You can use them to dust surfaces, clean mirrors and windows, and wipe down bathroom fixtures. To use unpaper towels for cleaning, you can make your own cleaning solution using ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.
  • If you have kids, you know how handy a cloth to wipe up spills is. Keep a few in your nappy bag to help with messes when out and about.
  • Keep a stack in your bathroom for easy and hygienic hand drying.

Alternatives – Cellulose Sponge Cloths

Another reusable option for the kitchen is a cellulose sponge. These absorbent cloths are made from plant-based materials and are 100% compostable.

Conclusion

In wrapping up, my experience with Earths Tribe Unpaper Towels has been overwhelmingly positive. This is an easy swap that is inexpensive and has a huge environmental impact over time.

It is not the exact same experience as using paper towel but it is easy to get used to. It is easy to build the habit of throwing your used towels in the wash and it’s a great feeling to know you aren’t contributing to deforestation through buying paper products.
